Even music instruments can be organic...

This is a teaser for the new film about the Recycled Orchestra. It's truly inspiring and shows us that music and beauty can be found anywhere and made out of almost anything.

To eat or not to eat?

Got a new schampoo,  conditioner and deep condioner from John Masters Organics. Needed to try something new after years of using ABBA. My scalp was getting dry again.

The schampoo is with zinc and sage and has the most delicious smell of hot fudge. Made me want to eat it instead of use it in my hair. Have only been using it for a few days so I don't know exactly how I feel about it yet, but my hair feels very clean. The conditioner is with citrus and neroli and that's also a lovely smell.

I read about the deep-conditioner in several fashion magazines and they were right! It left my hair feeling all silky and smooth.

As usual I got it from eleven.se. If you live in the U.S you can order directly from the website, and they have distributors all over the world.

Most of their products are vegan, and none of them are tested on animals. They have a lot of information about their ingredients and their eco-certification on the website if you want to find out more.

Fun fact: They even make schampoo and conditioner four your furry friends...

It is a bit pricey, but I've tried going back to cheaper, (organic and non organic) shampoos and skincare, and they made my skin itch and I had a breakout in my face. So Ill stick to the good stuff.

iPad

I finally got one.... What took me so long?

I love it! I do everything on it; social networking, watchcing movies, and I downloaded my first e-books.

Glögg

Glögg (mulled wine) is a very Swedish tradition. Christmas just isn't Christmas without it. We start drinking it as soon as the snow starts to fall or at the latest the first weekend of December. There are white or red versions and some of them has added flavours; for example apple, cognac or chocolate. The red ones you heat up and put almonds and raisins in. The white ones you can either heat up or drink cold with ice in it.

I have no idea if it's possible to find outside of Sweden, but if you're visiting wintertime I'm sure you'll have an opportunity to try it.

This years organic ones are;

Tegnér and son - red (with tastes of cherries and chocolate)
Vinterglöd - red (with tastes of cinnamon and ginger)
Ripa - red (with tastes of raisins and cardamon)
Vinfabriken - white (with tastes of apple and lemon)
Dufvenkrok - red (with tastes of gingerbread)

Recycled plastic bags

Have a look at the blog Greitzan. Such a cool way to recycle.

She used the plastic bags from Systembolaget (Swedish liquor store) to create a new bag. The bags from Systembolaget are all in similar colours and really not useful for anything after you brought your wines home. So this is really fun and creative. Also, check out the cosmetic pouch and iphone bag she made from other brands.

Another toothpaste

Decided to try a new one. Went for Weleda Salt Toothpaste this time.

The sea-salt is what's cleaning your teeth in this toothpaste, there's no flouride in it. There's also no preservatives, colourants or synthetic flavours.

It really doesn't taste great, but my mouth and teeth feels really clean after brushing. Since it's developed in collaboration with dentists it should work properly.

They have other ones to try if you don't like the taste of this one.

Read more about other Weleda products I've tried here.

Chewing gum

I didn't even know there was such a thing as an organic chewing gum, but Chicza apparently made one. Made of chicle and natural waxes and mixed with organic sweeteners and flavours this gum really tastes good. The texture is slightly different from regular gum, but once you get used to that it feels just the same.

Chicza is totally biodegradable and can be put on your compost together with branches and leaves. The brand also has multiple eco-labels including the FSC to show it's commitment to nature. Read more about that and the interesting way to make the "gum from the rainforest" on the homepage.

Yasuragi Hasseludden is a hotel and SPA in Stockholm. Situated close to the city but yet in the archipelago with a fantastic view it's a must to visit when you're in Stockholm. They are working intensely with sustainability issues, from leadership to organic food and products. For example; the house-keeping department only uses eco-labelled cleaning products and recently the restaurant started with Meat Free Mondays. Eco Sense Salong is a SPA in Stocholm that specializes in organic skincare. They offer all the treatments you can expect from a SPA using products from Dermanord, Lakshmi and Q for skin. All of them with natural ingredients, and Lakshmi is developed according to auyrvedic principles.

Playing games

Being the gadget freak that I am I found a great game (unfortunately only for iPhone/iPad so far) called Rescue Reef. Not only is it a fun game to play, I think it's great for kids (and adults) to have fun and learn about the ocean at the same time.

Basically you start with a dead gray reef. You build a rescue and start bringing animals in to feed, heal and clean them. After breeding them or playing with them to make them happy they are released out into the ocean again. For each level there are new species to rescue, and for each species you rescue you get information about that species, like where they live and what they eat and more fun easy to grasp facts. You have "celebrities" sponsoring animals, and you get extra points for picking up bottles, plastic and other rubbish from the bottom.

For each level the surrounding reef gets more color and life.

Try it! It's fun!

Chanel SS13 Paris

When Chanel showed their collection for Spring/Summer 2013 tonight at the Grand Palais they had a really creative setting.

I don't think it was intended to make a statement in the energy-debate, but it kind of does anyway. The runway itself is is painted to look like the models are walking on solar-panels. And take a look at the cool catwalk decorated with almost real size wind turbines.

Makes a powerful impression anyhow, doesn't it?

I really want this fab t-shirt...

Social media

I'm a social media geek and I use and explore all those fab social media sites for up to date information.

Twitter is my new drug and such a great source of information. Every minute, every day you can keep yourself updated with news, sports, fashion, politics, food, environment, health, economy, weather etc etc. You can interact with you favourite popstar, follow the race between Obama and Romney, watch Greenpeace trying to stop Gazprom or look at Anna Dello Russos beautiful outfits. What can possibly be better?

Twitter, blogs, Facebook, Google +, Flicker, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest etc etc. For inspiration, keeping up with friends, share ideas, getting hired, share your photos, share your stories -  you name it, they've got it!

A great way to be more environmentally friendly than buying newspapers that are outdated the minute they are distributed. And you get the news faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than newspapers and magazines with all that paper, ink and emissions during transportation.

Just perfect!

Mascara

I've been using Korres Abyssinia Oil Mascara for many years, and it's a great mascara. Good colour and stays on without smudging. Greece is the birthplace for the Korres brand, and a lot of the herbs used in this natural brand are from the Greek islands.

Just recently I changed my mascara, and I've finally found the best mascara ever! 100% Pure Black Tea mascara is fantastic. The best brush I've ever tried, and I've tried a few... Gives my lashes perfect length and volume to match. Feels almost like I'm wearing false lashes, without being over the top.

100% Pure products are organic, contains no synthetic chemicals, no detergents, no parabens, no phthalates, no chemical preservatives, no artificial fragrances or colors. All products are completely vegan and only fruit and vegetable pigments are used to give the products color.

As usual I bought mine at eleven.se. You can find 100% Pure stores in California only, but if you live in Europe (EU) you can order directly from the website.

Espresso - this is something else

For those of us that loves the cute and smart pods and the cool design of the Nespresso-machines, here are some good news. In an earlier note I wrote that Nespresso don't have any organic coffee and about the problems to recycle the pods.

Ethical Coffee Company  has a solution to this. Their pods fits perfectly in the Nespresso-machines and they are filled with organic and Fair Trade coffee (the Lungo and Inca Soave capsules). The pods are biodegradable and can be thrown in the trash or put on your compost. Great news for all coffee-lovers out there. Great christmasgift for my husband who has been longing for one. Stores can be found in lots of European countries and in the U.S.

So you can sip an organic expresso after a nice dinner or enjoy a cappuccino mixed with organic milk and cinnamon before work. Isn't it great with new innovations that find even better ways to improve new cool things. I love it!

Since the CEO of Ethical Coffee Company used to be the CEO of Nespresso I' m sure he knows what he's doing and provides top notch products. Maybe it's time for me to start drinking coffee...

Meat Free Monday

Tonight we had beefs made of ricotta cheese. They were really easy to make and soooo delicious!

4 persons

50gr parmesan cheese
500gr ricotta cheese
2,5 tablespoons of flour (I used wheat flour)
1dl chives
1tablespoon of fresh thyme
1 egg
oliveoil or butter
salt
freshly ground black pepper

Grate the parmesan cheese and chop the chives and the thyme. Mix it together with ricotta, flour and egg yolk and season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 2 pinches of pepper.

Whisk the egg-white until it becomes a compact foam, then gently toss it into the cheese-paste.

Put 2dl flour on a plate and put about 1/2dl of paste onto it. Put flour on your hands and shape the beefs.

Fry the beefs in a lot of oil/butter. Appr. 3 minutes on each side.

We ate it together with a salad made of spinnach, radish, rocket, tomatoes and cucumber sprinkled with olive oil.

Fast Food

In the fast lane of life, grabbing a quick lunch at the local restaurant usually leaves you with two or three choices; Big M, BK or Fried Chicken from Kentucky. Not very healthy options, and the more you eat of sugar, trans-fats and salts the more addicted you get. If you've ever tried to stop drinking Coke, you know what I mean.

That's why the new (opened in October 2011) restaurant (soon to be an entire chain)  Lyfe Kitchen is really interesting. They want to mix the organic gourmet restaurant with the concept of fast food, and the combination of a former CEO at McDonalds and two of the best chefs in the industry; Art Smith and Tal Ronnen, sounds really exciting.

You can look through the entire menu on the website and even se photos of some of the dishes. The entire concept feels fresh and new. Haven't been there yet, but looking forward to try it on my next trip to U.S.

You can read an intereqsting article about the concept here. It all sounds high-tech, highly effective and forward-thinking.

One huge questionmark remains... When is Lyfe coming to Sweden?

Ella's Kitchen

Ella's Kitchen is the coolest brand for kids right now. It was invented by a dad who wanted to provide his kids with nothing but the best; organic food with a great taste. In addition to being organic, their products contain no sugar, salt or nuts and of course there are no E-numbers or GM products.

There are a lot of different types of food to choose from, from fruits to full meals to desserts and snacks. The meals come adjusted for certain ages and also special diets like lactose or vegetarian.

And the containers are just the cutest! No glass that can break, they are completely chemical-free and can easily be re-sealed and finished later. If you stock up, they can even be put in the freezer. Perfect when you're on the run since they are so easy to bring and the kids can eat straight from the container. Good news for all parents I think.

Another great thing is that you can easily bring the products on the plane when travelling. British Airways has actually included Ella's Kitchens fruit-smoothies in their child breakfast meals. How cool is that?

Ella's won the Grocery brand of the year award in 2011 in Sweden and they have recieved several other awards for their products.

When the containers are empty, you can recycle and reuse them with TerraCycle. So far only in the U.K, Ireland and Sweden.

Strawberries

In Sweden strawberries are the biggest sign that summer has finally arrived. Ask any Swede and he/she will tell you that there is absolutely no strawberries anywhere in the world as good as the Swedish ones. We eat them for breakfast, lunch and dessert and we put them in salads for dinner together with grilled meat. We eat them as snacks, as appetizers together with feta-cheese, or in smoothies. The best thing ever is to go to your local farmer and pick them yourself. You spend hours in the fields eating as many as you're picking and leave sunburnt with red fingertips and many, many liters of bright red berries. Those get in the freezer to enjoy wintertime or they are turned into jam or cordials.

Pesticides used when growing strawberries in Sweden are Betanal SC/Kemifam SC. The company that sells these products in Sweden (Bayer CropScience) writes on their own website that whatever is left of the pesticide after spraying the fields shall be kept away from children and animals and separated from food. I really don't see how that goes together since we serve those sprayed strawberries to our children later....

In a test carried out in 2009, 94% of the conventionally grown strawberries (Swedish and others) contained traces of pesticides. Several of the pesticides discovered are suspected to cause cancer.

The good news is that the industry is working to find solutions that allow less harmful farming, so I hope it will soon be easier to find organic ones. Strawberries grown organically will meet challenges like weed, fungus and different pests, so you need to grow tough species and to put in more work to keep your plants free. It's definitely worth doing so though since studies have shown that organic strawberries can actually prevent cancer. Makes the choice quite easy... You can read more about this at krav.se

According to a recent study made at Lunds University in Sweden, bees really like organic strawberries. They pollinated 45% of the strawberry-flowers on the organic farms and only 17% on the conventional farms. So you can basically turn one wrong into two rights and have bee-hives next to your strawberry-farm.

Eat!

Eat! Ekostore is a fantastic little store in the centre of Stockholm that has everything you need, just as your regular supermarket. You can find milk, meat, juice, vegetables and grains. They have a selection of schampoos, detergents, baby-products and sunscreens as well as chocolate, candies, nuts and much much more. So there is nothing you can't find in here. It feels good to know that you don't have to check for the organic labels, instead you just buy what you need and you'll know it's not harmful in any way. They are open 7 days a week with really generous opening hours, so there's no reason to shop anywhere else. It's also nice to support the local community and to make sure we keep wonderful places like this one open.

If you're a company they're able to deliver fruit to the office; a nice and easy way to care about your employees. They will even bring coffee, milk or other products if you want to. Of course your shopping will be delivered in a car that runs on biogas.

As an ECOmmunity member you'll get special deals and invitations to events, and if you're on Twitter or Facebook you'll get all the latest news and offers. Also, check out their website were you can read their blog and find some delicious dinner inspiration in the recipes section.

Earth from Above

The French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand takes truly amazing pictures of our earth.

What's important to this photographer is to show the impact humans have on the planet, and his book Earth from Above has sold millions of copies all over the world. I have a version of that book called Earth from above - 365 days. It's a fantastic book with amazing photos and next to each picture he talks about the beauty of that particular place but also what difficulites they face and what steps needs to be taken to take care of the planet, the people and the animals that lives here.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand is also the creator of Goodplanet Foundation that aims to raise awareness on environmental issues. They have several interesting projects including "7 billion Others". In this project they have interviewed 6000 people in 84 counties about their daily life and their hopes and dreams for the future. It's meant to show what unites us, to make us reach out to each other and to realize that we're all in this together.

Check out his website and browse through many spectacular pictures. The book Earth from Above is a perfect gift to friends and family.

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood has always had a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility, and in her collection Red Label Summer 2012 she introduced a cooperation with Cool Earth. This organization is protecting our rainforests, and their main goal is to save those parts of the forests that are in immediate danger of being destroyed. They are working together with local communities to provide a sustainable future for the people of the rainforest.

Scary fact - The Amazon rainforest provides 20% of the world’s fresh water and a fifth of the world’s oxygen.
Still 400 000kvm (100 acres) of rainforest is being cleared every minute! Cool Earth caluculated it like this - In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York. That really puts it into perspective, doesn't it?

Vivienne Westwood is also involved in another important project. For the winter 2012/2013 she has designed a collection of handbags made from recycled materials and handmade in Kenya. This project is carried out with support from the U.N. Ethical Fashion Program designed to empower women in some of the poorest communities in the world.

Cell Phones

Using headphones when speaking on you cell phone is one of the easiest ways to keep radiation away from vital parts. Make sure also to keep your cell phone away from your body, i.e. in your purse, not in your pockets.

Recent research shows that we should keep our cell phones at least 15cm (6inches) away from our bodies. WHO has even put cell phones in the class 2B which means they are possibly carcinogenic to humans.

Check out this really interesting and scary information from Dr. Devra Davis;  Cell Phone Dangers. She shows the danger of radiation and especially warns pregnant women and children.

There is also some great tips on how to reduce the risks.

Bike to Work Day

Today it is Bike to Work Day in Denver. The League of American Bicyclists promotes this all across USA every year in may. May is Bike Month, last week of may is Bike Week and Bike to Work Day is Friday in Bike Week. Denver choose June instead of May, and 17904 persons took their bikes to work in Denver today.

Anyone can arrange a bike to work day together with their company or organization. If you email about your event to the League they will post it on their website to promote it and to encourage others to join in.

Some of the major cities that arranges this event have refreshment stations, they give out t-shirts and maps and arrange competitions. People ride bicycles with their kids to school and teach them about safety on the road at the same time. Races are arranged to see if you get to your destination the quickest by bus, car or bicycle during the rush hours.

Such a cool way to do something for your health, for the environment and together with the people of your company or community at the same time.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

Indoor air pollution is not something we come across very often in the western world. But according to WHO, indoor air pollution kills over 2 million! people each year from diseases like pneumonia, lung cancer and heart disease. More than half of them are children under the age of 5. That's 5500 persons each day or 230 persons each hour that dies because they are cooking a meal for their family.

This is due to the fact that half of the worlds population cook their meals on open fires or stoves that burns biomass (wood, agricultural waste, charcoal, animal droppings etc). When cooking on inefficient stoves in poorly ventilated homes the fumes is highly toxic to both people and the environment. It can reach up to 200 times the level of toxins that's safe to breathe. In you own home!

Apart from being dangerous to your health it also highly impacts our environment. When those fuels are being burnt it creates carbon dioxide and methane which is a factor to climate change. Cutting down trees to use as fuel also leads to deforestation and erosion of the soil.

In a larger perspective, having a better way to cook food would benefit the economies of developing countries. Instead of spending up to 20h a week collecting fuel, women could work and children could go to school. That would benefit the entire family and in the end the entire country.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is an initiative started by U.N. in 2010 and is meant to bring together governments, the private sector and other actors in a joint effort to develop and produce new stoves that will be cleaner, more efficient, more durable and cheaper. Their goal is that, by the year of 2020, there will be 100 million households using this kind of stoves.

In an effort to empower women it's also one of the goals that selling and repairing these stoves will create new business opportunities for women all over the world.

To work locally and share your knowledge globally is the best way to sustainability I can think of.

Read more and work together with Julia Roberts and Hillary Rodham Clinton and many many more to reach the goal by 2020 on Clean Cookstoves.

Refreshments

I tried a new organic fruit-drink today from Belvoir Fruit Farms

This was a pressé made of organic elderflower. Usually I find elderflower a bit too sweet, but this was the most delicious thirst quencher I've ever tried! Poured over a lot of ice it really is suitable for anything; a summer lunch, a trip to the beach or mixed with the evening drinks. Checking out their website I'm obviously not the only one who likes it. Belvoir has recieved several awards for their drinks.

Not all Belvoir drinks are organic, but none of them use any ingredients derived from animals, any chemical preservatives or artificial colors or flavours.

Their products can be bought in 21 countries, and in Sweden you can find it at Goodstore.

Electro Luxury

I watched CBS 60 minutes this weekend about Elon Musk who's the CEO and co-founder of Tesla Motors. This is the guy that founded PayPal and he is also the CEO of SpaceX; a forward thinking company working with private and commercial space transport. It was a good portrait, and I always find people that has the guts to take a big step out of their comfort-zone really interesting.

Tesla Motors is a young company (founded in 2003) that works on bringing us electrical cars without compromising with design and performance. They have produced three models so far and from what I've read on the internet most reviewers really likes what they see and experience.

As a gadget maniac, cool features like a really large touchscreen for information and entertainment in the front and a prepared slot to put you iPod in is really appealing.

As long as you choose where you buy your electricity from (sun, wind, water etc.) there are no emissions whatsoever with theese cars.

Model X

Model X is the SUV and will go into production in late 2013. It accelerates from 0-60 mph (96km/h) in under 5 seconds. On the homepage you can have a close look at it from a 360-degree angle.

Model S

This car is under production and deliveries will begin in the autumn of 2012. It's topspeed is 125 mph (200km/h). Accelerates 0-60mph (96km/h) in 4,4 sec. Estimated range (85 kWh) is 300 miles (480km) if you drive at 60mhp.

Roadster

On the website you can design your own and see exactly what it would look like with different colours, wheels, interior etc.  Accelerates 0-60 mph (96km/h) in 3,7 sec. The range is 245 miles (390km) per charge and top-speed is 125 mph (200km/h).

Kingfisher Toothpaste

After a tip from a friend I just recently bought my first organic toothpaste from Kingfisher. This toothpaste contains no artificial colourings, sweeteners or preservatives and the flavours come from natural lemon, fennel or mint for examle.

I choose the fennel one without flouride, and it really tastes great and leaves that fresh feel that you expect a toothpaste to do. It should do it's job properly, it's approved by the British Dental Health Foundation to do as good a job as any of the regular ones.
